Location
My name is Jonathan Parker and I'm the Founder of Star Search Casting ( http://StarSearchCasting.com ). Back in 1998,after working in the entertainment industry for a number of years as a talent scout, I became aware of so many individuals with tremendous potential that just weren’t getting the exposure they needed to succeed. That’s when I first conceived of Star Search Casting as a way to help people be “discovered” by getting their faces and resumes in front of thousands of entertainment professionals who were in the position to hire them. Years in development, Star Search Casting became not only the most sophisticated casting site with the most advanced search engine, talent database, and tools to help you get maximum exposure, it also became the number one site where industry professionals go to find new talent!! I can’t tell you how absolutely thrilled I am that SSC has achieved the goal I had in mind when it was originally created!

How To Secure Your Future On The Stage

If you’ve ever followed the work of theater directors, you may notice that they often work with many of the same actors repeatedly. Whether you’re an actor, dancer, singer or model, it’s important to remember that cultivating relationships with decision makers in the entertainment industry is paramount to career longevity. If a successful director takes a liking to you, that could mean steady work for you for years to come.

So how do you make an impression on a director to help solidify your position and success in the industry? Here are a few tips:

  • Try to memorize your lines before your first rehearsal. There’s no better way to blow a director away than by showing him or her that you’ve come prepared and ready to work.

  • Always be on time (and preferably early.) I know I always stress this and you probably think I sound like a broken record, but in the entertainment industry time is money and there’s no such thing as being fashionably late.

  • Come to rehearsal prepared to take notes. You can use a pencil to mark up your script or bring an extra notebook. Sometimes it’s difficult to remember all of the notes that the director will give, or changes in blocking, so make sure you write them down. And be sure to review these notes often so that they sink in.

  • Be courteous of the staff and crew during rehearsal. Unnecessary chatter can be frustrating and distracting to others in the theater, so when you’re not rehearsing one of your scenes, stay focused so you’ll be ready to tackle your scene when it’s your turn.

One of the last rules of thumb is to always take great care of your costume and your props. Most costume directors will require that you leave your costume at the theater, however sometimes actors become absent-minded and may take a costume or prop home with them accidentally. I once had a friend who not only took a part of his costume home (a Starbucks apron) but also promptly lost it. He spent the next day driving to various Starbucks locations trying to buy an apron from one of the baristas. While it may sound like a funny story now - trust me - it was no laughing matter.

Are you ready to use these tips to impress theater directors and ensure a long-lasting, and successful career on the stage? Visit http://StarSearchCasting.com today and check out our casting calls for theater auditions in your area and abroad. Good luck!

Scam Watch – Fatal Photo Shoots

In 1992, 21-year old model Kimberly Pandelios told her husband that she was meeting with a photographer. However the man who’d led her to believe he was a photographer was actually a registered sex offender who lured Pandelios into the Angeles National Forest where he sexually assaulted and killed her.

Kimberly was probably a lot like many young, aspiring models. She was beautiful, vibrant and eager to take on the world. She’d had some success modeling swimwear and lingerie when she’d discovered a model-wanted ad in a local weekly newspaper. She had hoped the opportunity would help her make some headway in her career. Instead, she met a tragic end.

Unfortunately, this story is not an uncommon one. And it doesn’t just happen to new models. Linda Sobek, a former Raiders cheerleader and Playboy model met a similar fate when she left her home to attend a photo shoot. In her case, the photographer who killed her was at the time a reputable photographer who had actually amassed a small fortune and some fame and who’s work had appeared in many automotive magazines.

We often discuss the growing number of Internet scams that constantly target aspiring models, but one Star Search Casting member recently discussed the importance of remaining aware of the dangers that face models in the real world as well. Every day people reach out to aspiring models on the street, in stores, or through newspaper or online classifieds with legitimate offers. However, there are also criminals who use these same methods to lure models with malicious intent.

To avoid becoming the victim of dangerous crime, always remember to:

  • Ask for references from photographers, agents or other industry professionals before agreeing to work with them.

  • Take a friend or family member with you to photo shoots and meetings with agents, photographers or other industry professionals, especially if you’ve not worked with them in the past and you have not secured the job through a reputable agency.

  • Be cautious of applying to blind ads in newspapers or online. If you choose to apply to these ads, be sure to thoroughly research the agency or photographer that you will be meeting with.

  • And last but not least, always go with your instincts. Intuition is one of the most powerful resources you have to protect you from dangerous situations. Therefore don’t get involved with a project or an agency if you have a bad feeling about it.

How To Get The Attention Of New Designers Pt 2.

Jonathan Parker starsearchcasting.com elitecastingnetwork.com

Previously we began talking about what you need to know to book a job with a new designer. For expert advice, we interviewed Ivory Narvell, founder of the Miss Spokesmodel International modeling competition and designer of ReignSuit, a new line of swimwear launching this year. Ivory Narvell has worked with lots of models, including Dani Evans from America’s Next Top Model and was more than happy to give our members and us the scoop on how they can grab the attention of new designers.

When we interviewed Ivory Narvell, she gave us so much great advice that we decided to create a list of the top tips Ivory shared with us during her interview. Check out these tips below. We’re sure they’ll be extremely helpful in your quest to land jobs modeling with new designers.

Top Tips from Ivory Narvell, fashion designer and runway coach:

  • Always be on time – if not early. Time is money and no one likes to wait on a model.

  • Know what you really want to do in this industry and where you fit in.

  • Learn as many skills as you can. Even if you are considered too short for most agencies to hire you for a fashion show, perfect your runway walk anyway. You never know what opportunities may arise.

  • Don’t get discouraged if you’re experiencing lots of rejection. Different designers want different things from models. You’ll get your shot.

  • Know the ins and outs of the industry so that when a designer or agency approaches you about a job, you can discuss the opportunity intelligently. There are a lot of girls who have a great look but don’t get booked because they don’t appear to take the industry seriously.

  • Even if you do not have a professional portfolio, make sure you have snap shots of yourself, preferably with no make up. Also have full body shots because designers will need to see your body type.

  • When you’re taking your photos, always make sure there is proper lighting and never over-exaggerate when posing.

Special thanks to Ivory Narvell for sharing her expert advice with us. Ready to put Ivory’s advice to the test? Visit http://StarSearchCasting.com for casting calls from designers and agencies, plus a whole lot more!

How To Get The Attention Of New Designers Pt 1.

While you may have to have quite a bit of experience (or a lucky break) before you’re able to land a job modeling major fashion brands like Gucci or Calvin Klein, there are tons of new designers out there who are looking for models just like you. Often up and coming designers have great ideas, innovative designs and superb collections, but small budgets. Therefore new designers often look for new models that are willing to work for experience, or a smaller fee than more experienced models. That’s where you come in.

So what does it take to get the attention of new designers and book a job modeling their latest clothing lines? For the answer, I caught up with Ivory Narvell to get the inside scoop. Ivory Narvell has worked in the industry as a runway coach and stylist and now she’s launching ReignSuit, her new line of swimwear. She’s helped lots of new models, including Dani Evans (America’s Next Model) on their road towards fame as the founder of the Miss Spokesmodel International modeling competition. Here’s what Ivory had to say…

Jon: What characteristics do you look for in models when selecting them to model your designs?

Ivory: As a swimwear designer I look for someone with a naturally fit body. Proportion is very important too. For fit models, their measurements must match our sizing charts. For runway models, they must have a great runway walk. For print models, again proportion is a must. Additionally, they must be able to pose well, have great skin and take direction.

Jon: What advice would you give to models who are submitting their photos for consideration to work with designers?

Ivory: It can be a tough industry and not everyone will love you, so it’s important that you develop thick skin. However, while you may not be the right model for one job, keep going and stay positive because you might be the right model for the next job.

Jon: There’s so much competition in the industry. What measures can new models take to standout and get designers to notice them?

Ivory: After a model call, make sure you follow up with a thank you letter by mail. I recall an instance when a model who wasn’t very memorable sent me a thank you letter after a casting call. While she didn’t get the job initially, because she sent the letter which made her instantly standout, I booked her at a later time.

Wow, what great advice! If you want to read more advice from Ivory Narvell, log in tomorrow for more great tips. Ivory gave us a lot more information, so make sure you read tomorrow’s blog. Could You Be The Next Ryan Seacrest Or Kelly Ripa?

Untitled

If you’re a fan of reality television, then you’ve probably noticed that quite a few actors, singers, dancers and models are jumping on the bandwagon and taking jobs as on-air personalities and television show hosts. These jobs offer great opportunities for visibility and exposure, and can help make actors household names.

To land a job as a television host or on-air personality, you have to be charismatic, engaging and be able to get people excited about the information you’re presenting or the show you’re hosting. If you consider yourself to be well spoken, articulate and confident then you would probably make a great host or on-air personality. Some well-known on-air personalities and television hosts include Ryan Seacrest (American Idol) and Sugar Ray lead singer, Mark McGrath (Extra). Another great example is Kelly Ripa. She started in the business as a soap opera actress, and now she’s the host of one of the most successful television morning shows, Live with Regis and Kelly.

Carmen Cecilia Limardo, known more fondly as “CC” is a Star Search Casting member and an experienced television host. She’s worked in the industry since 1993 and has been an on-air correspondent on shows appearing on Univision and Telemundo as well as the host of the sports, music and comedy show, Thunderbox. CC has a dynamic voice, and this attribute has largely contributed to her success. In addition to helping her land great jobs as a television host, she’s also done voiceovers for commercials for Marshall’s, Burger King, US Airways, Disney, Dunkin Donuts, McDonald’s and tons of other popular U.S. brands.

We’ve had lots of casting calls on our websites for on-air personalities and hosts. When casting directors post these auditions, they often use words like charming, dashing and confident to describe the type of talent they are looking for. Does that sound like you? If so, you could be well on your way to launching a career as a successful television host!

So what are you waiting for? Visit www.StarSearchCasting.com today to search for casting calls for television hosts and on-air personalities. And in the meantime, if you want to get experience as a television host, public access channels are a great way to get your feet wet. Contact your local cable company to learn more about hosting opportunities on existing shows or starting your own show. Good luck!

Untitled

As the number of entertainment scams targeting aspiring actors, singers, dancers and models escalate, and scammers become more sophisticated in their methods, it can be tricky to identify the difference between a scam and a legitimate opportunity. In response to the growing number of modeling scam victims, Elite Casting Network ( www.EliteCastingNetwork.com ), in addition to becoming the number one casting website, has also become the leading provider of up-to-date information on the latest entertainment industry scams. Elite Casting Network educates users on how to spot a scam; actively monitors all site activity to prevent members from becoming the victim of popular internet scams; and encourages members to report suspicious activities and warn others if they’ve uncovered a scam.

Our members use our site not only because they know they’ll get access to valuable casting opportunities, but also because they know our website is a safe environment that’s actively monitored to prevent scammers from taking advantage of them,” says Jonathan Parker, CEO of Elite Casting Network, Inc. “In addition to making sure that the site is safe, we also try to educate our members on how to spot a scam. Many Internet users think that if a site or service charges money that it’s automatically a scam, but this is one of the most misleading pieces of advice circulating the web. More accurately, if the site or service asks for money but only accepts cash or money orders, that’s an immediate red flag.”

The staff at Elite Casting Network is very knowledgeable of scamming trends and it’s this knowledge that helps to keep the site and its members safe. Elite Casting Network staff members regularly and routinely updates its members on the latest industry scams. When members log in to their website, the Entertainment Scam Alert section provides instant updates on the most recent scammer activity targeting aspiring actors, dancers, models and actors. Additionally Elite Casting Network staff members post information about these scams in the site's forums to make sure members are informed and aware of potential scams. Many of these posts occur within 24-48 hours of the scam’s first appearance on the internet.

In response to escalating Internet scams, the staff at Elite Casting Network monitors all of the messages on the site regularly to ensure the safety of its members. Additionally when members access their messages, Elite Casting Network provides their members with an option at the top of each message to flag the message if they encounter spam or abuse.

Elite Casting Network members also work to keep the site safe, and to keep fellow members from falling victim to Internet scams. Elite Casting Network members are encouraged to post information about acting scams in the site’s forums if they encounter a scam or have become the victim of a scam. www.FabulousFlashcast.com Modeling Scam Run by Carl Carranza

www.FabulousFlashcast.com Modeling Scam Fraud

I didn't write this but I found it so I thought people would be interested:

I contacted http://www.fabulousflashcast.com after I saw their casting call posted on another site. Then I started doing some digging and found a lot of bad information about them. They used to have a website called http://www.flashcastkids.com but scammed a lot of people so they changed their site to http://www.fabulousflashcast.com. Flashcast still post fake Auditions all over the web on places like craigslist. The Better Business Bureau gives them an 'F' rating which is the lowest possible score. This is what the BBB said about Flashcast:

“On December 18, 2001, we were advised by the company that they would no longer respond to the complaints presented by the Bureau.

On July 24, 2001, the Los Angeles City Attorney filed a 14 count misdemeanor action against the company and its principal, Carl Carranza. The complaint alleged in part, that the defendants made misleading statements in print ads, verbally, and on their website.

On May 17, 2002, Flashcast, and its principal, Carl Carranza, were convicted of 10 counts of using false and misleading advertising in violation of the California Business & Professions code. The company and Mr. Carranza were placed on probation for 36 months and ordered to pay a fine of $4,050.00. They were also ordered to include a statement listing any fees charged, including monthly fees, in all of their advertisements. Anyone seeing an ad that does not contain the fee information is asked to contact Mark Lambert, Deputy Los Angeles City Attorney at (213) 978-8070.”

This is their address:

Fabulous Flashcast

3575 Cahuenga Blvd West, Suite 120
Universal City, CA 90068

(323) 969-9006

Has anyone else dealt with this company?

Here are some things I found in google:

1. Business Owner Carl Ken Carranza and his Universal City-based company Flashcast were convicted last week on 10 counts of false advertising and could face a total of $60,000 in fees and up to five years of jail time. Sentencing will take place on June 19. To read more go here: http://www.allbusiness.com/services/amusement-recreation-services/4380114-1.html

2. I worked for Flashcast almost ten years ago and I'm shocked by the fact that they are still in business. We were told to lie to potential clients and when they were called back because their child was 'cute' (ALL WERE CALLED BACK!), the head 'Casting Director' would tell the parents that they were auditioning for Huggies, Pampers, and other well-known companies even though they were not. To read more go here: http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/0/093/RipOff0093945.htm#126469

3. Carl Carranza, Flashcast Kids and Flashcast Companies, Inc. has stooped to fraud and deception again. One would have thought Carranza learned his lesson after being convicted on May 17, 2002 of 10 counts of fraud and false and misleading advertising, and was forced to pay thousands in fines (he was also sentenced to three years probation). to read more go to: http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/0/105/RipOff0105343.htm

4. They advertise what looks like an audition in the industry and then they sell what they call their 'computerized casting service.' So you go there, you audition, they don't tell you about a fee. Then if you're called back (everyone gets called back if Carl Carranza thinks he can get money out of them), they tell you at that point that you have to make your decision right then. There's an initial fee of around $495, and you're obligated for the next two years to send them 20 photos, plus a $50-a-month fee. That's $1,200 over two years, plus the initial $500 registration, plus the cost of 20 photos per month. to read more go here: http://www.allbusiness.com/services/amusement-recreation-services/4380693-1.html

5. The case against Flashcast Entertainment is based on a 14-count complaint against owner Carl Ken Carranza and Deborah Elton Haugen charging them of being an unlawful job-listing service as well as falsely advertising in the LA Weekly and on the company's own website, www.flashcastkids.com & www.FabulousFlashcast.com. To read more go here: http://www.easybackgroundcheck.com/news/10.html

6. I recently signed with Flashcast and parted with $1500 in order to do so. These fraudsters need to be stopped! To read more go here: http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/0/232/RipOff0232900.htm

7. They kept her mighty busy with more compliments and questions and fake interest, to keep her from reading all of their safety net legal stuff and small print. After signing away her life, she was asked for her identification and credit card for "verification purposes". These people will tell you anything to get your money. To read more go here: http://www.pissedconsumer.com/consumer-reviews/professional/flashcast-%11-carl-caranzaaddress%3a3575-cahuenga-blvd-(also%2c--review-%11-service%11professional-2007040897697.html

8. On top of paying $1500 and still no modeling jobs not even one, my daughter has worked with other companies and clothing lines where they have never asked for a dime. Carl Carranza and Fabolous Flashcast are total scammers. To read more go here: http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/0/260/RipOff0260231.htm

9. Company works from a very official looking office in LA in not a bad area and goes to every length to convince clients that everything is legit. Suspicion is raised by the mountain of very similar looking referral letters printed in the same font almost and the robotic but convincing sales pitch of two employees. Carl Carranza posts fake success stories all over the web trying to build credibility for himself. To read more go here: http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/0/032/RipOff0032559.htm

10. Hard to believe that Carl Carranza and Fabolous Flashcast / Flashcast Kids are still in business, despite the numerous warnings on the Internet and the convictions for FRAUD. Carl Carranza has mastered the art of lying to your face to get your money. To read more go here: http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/0/090/RipOff0090062.htm

11. When Brad was about 6 months old, we got suckered into a uniquely Los Angeles scam by 'Fabolous Flashcast', where we paid $500 for nothing. To read more go here: http://parentingfrontline.blogspot.com/2008/03/march-madness.html

12. We are recent victims of his fraudulent practice and are filing a case against him. Mr. Carranza's scams include illegal advance fee requests, pretense for being a legitimate practice, and use of hardball sales and emotional tactics to acquire money from intelligent and innocent parents. Carl Carranza and needs to be shut down for good. To read more go here: http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/0/132/RipOff0132815.htm

13. Then, we were asked to meet with the CEO and he was very positive about the kids. He then goes through what the company does and talks quickly about a fee of $1500. To read more go here: http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/0/132/RipOff0132815.htm#156769

14. Flashcast kids company is a total rip off... they will fool you to pay money and then they never respond to you ever again... it happened to me and my family. To read more go here: http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/0/093/RipOff0093344.htm#58066

15. Can you believe this company still going on and on? Ripping off parents like us and using our child as a way of getting their money. Flashcast will steal your money and you get nothing for it. To read more go here: http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/0/093/RipOff0093344.htm

16. Don't pay Fabulous Flashcast - http://www.fabulousflashcast.com anything! They are a complete scam company who posts fake modeling jobs for kids in order to get your money! Just do a check on craigs list and you will find they post the same fake auditions over and over. The owner of Flashcast is Carl Ken Carranza who is a convicted criminal. To read more go here: http://www.complaintsboard.com/complaints/fabulous-flashcast-c76710.html

17. One look at their terrible website and you can tell they are a scam: http://www.fabulousflashcast.com/welcome.html

18. My complaint is against flashcast which is a fraud and scam, this company when you first arrive have you sit in a playroom, where there are pictures of kids that so called modeled for carl caranza. To read more go here: http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/0/260/RipOff0260231.htm

19. Because of the nature of their business, they can say anything they want, and blame their lack of performance and unfulfilled promises on the industry, your child, etc., and hide behind their small print. To read more go here: http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/0/242/RipOff0242913.htm

20. The Fabulous Flashcast scam continues even after CEO Carl Carranza is convicted of fraud. To read more go here: http://www.starsearchcasting.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=137820

21. Flashcast cunningly fools eager parents into believing that their kids might be future stars and commands a large fee upfront. Company is allegedly trying to find modeling work for clients babies and commands a large fee up front. To read more go here: http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/0/032/RipOff0032559.htm

22. I was also scammed. I paid $1500.00 almost a year ago and have only had one casting call that wasn't even for babies! To read more go here: http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/0/001/RipOff0001927.htm#208336

23. This company is a total rip-off. Yes, something has to be done, to keep other parents from being deceived. They pretend to be a legitimate company but they are far from being a true casting company. 24. I too have been riped off. Are You Ready To Live On The Edge?

UntitledIf you’ve been checking out our casting calls then you know that there are a variety of jobs out there available to aspiring actors and actresses. If you’re considering breaking into the entertainment industry, and you’re athletic, adventurous and you’re looking for a bit of excitement, then a career as a stunt person might just be the job for you!

I don’t know about you but I love action films and I’ve always wondered what it’s like for actors like Jackie Chan (Rush Hour) and Matt Damon (The Bourne Ultimatum) who’ve starred in some of the most exciting films to hit the box office. I’ve always been even more curious to learn about the stunt doubles who’ve worked alongside them handling the more dangerous stunts – everything from jumping off of buildings to high speed car chases that end in a fiery crash.

Mark Bedell is a Star Search Casting member who’s seen the action firsthand! Mark Bedell, like many of our members is a multi-talented actor who has really worked hard to make a name for himself in the entertainment business. He has worked as an actor in nearly 20 projects, including roles on the popular soap opera Passions. In addition to his acting work, he’s worked as a stunt coordinator and stunt performer on more than 20 projects. Talk about an adrenaline rush!

While a career as a stunt person can be action-packed as well as lucrative, it’s important to point out that there are lots of dangers and risks involved. You may suffer from muscle strain, sprains, broken bones, concussions and other minor and sometimes major injuries. Serious injuries, in addition to being painful, can also lead to loss of current and future jobs.

If you still think you might enjoy a career as a stunt person, then it’s important that you develop a list of skills to help you land a job. Stunt people often have taken classes to learn a variety of skills and talents such as martial arts, horseback riding, fencing and scuba diving among other useful skills. Stunt people also often spend a great amount of time in the gym because it’s important that they remain in shape to help them deal with the challenges of the job, as well as ward off injury.

Even if you don’t think you’re cut out for the intensive demands of film and television stunts, it’s important that all actors and actresses stay in tip-top shape. While directors turn to stunt specialists for much of the stunt work done in films, you may still be required to throw a punch in a scene or engage in rigorous physical activity. Recently a friend of mine was required to perform a stunt in a pool in an independent film. He had a great time doing it, and was filled with pride once it was complete.

To learn more about the variety of jobs that are available to you in the entertainment industry, whether you’re interested in becoming a stunt person, or something a bit less risky, visit our auditions page at http://www.StarSearchCasting.com today and explore jobs that would be perfect for you.

Scam Watch: Beware Of Erick Kent & The Pembroke Recruitment Agency

UntitledScams can cost aspiring models a fortune! Whether it’s a modeling school that requires you to take pricey modeling classes or illegitimate agency that sends you a fake check to cash, modeling scams in all forms can cost you both your hard earned money as well as your dignity.

If you get any emails with the phone prefix +4470 – do not call the number. Phone calls to these numbers will transfer you to an unpublished phone number and can cost you up to £2 per minute, which is almost four American dollars.

A scammer using the name Erick Kent has been identified as one of the individuals using these high-priced phone numbers to lure unsuspecting models. See below for an example of the messages he’s been sending:

Step It Up: How To Pick Up Choreography Quickly

Untitled Often when dance auditions are posted, the casting notice will include a list of requirements. Requirements may be related to age or height and often you’ll have to know a particular style of dance like tap or hip-hop. One of the most common requirements included in dance casting notices is that the dancers must be able to pick up choreography quickly.

Dancers who are able to pick up choreography quickly are most likely to be hired for jobs. Directors and choreographers prefer to save time (and money) by working with dancers who are fast learners. Both new and experienced dancers often struggle with choreography, so if this is a problem for you, don’t feel that you’re alone.

Here are a few tips that dancers often use to help them overcome this common problem:

-Visualize yourself performing the movements as the choreographer runs through them. Repetition is the key to learning new moves, and doing them in your head repeatedly can be just as effective as physically performing the routine over and over again.

-Give each step a name. Creating a name for each move often helps dancers remember the steps more easily as well as anticipate the next move as they’re going through a routine.

-Imitate the choreographer using small movements as he or she goes through the routine. By imitating the movements as soon as you are shown the steps, you begin acclimating your body to the moves, which can also help you remember them better when it’s time to perform them.

-Pay close attention to how the choreography relates to the music.  If the choreographer inserts a jump at a point in the song when the singer sings, “jump back” or something similar, those keywords can be a big help.

Lots of dancers create their own techniques for helping them pick up choreography. By talking with other dancers, as well as teachers and choreographers, you can find out lots of creative ways to help you learn choreography more quickly as well as become a better dancer overall. To discuss techniques with other Star Search Casting members who are pursuing careers in the field of dance, log on to http://www.StarSearchCasting.com. Our community forum is a great place to trade tips and get great insights into the industry. Don’t forget to check out our auditions for upcoming dance opportunities near you.

A PERFECT FIT: Working as a fit model in the fashion industry

UntitledElite Casting Network posts casting calls daily for a variety of modeling jobs. Whether you’re interested in runway, catalog or swimwear modeling, there’s something for everyone on our website. One of our most recent casting calls was for fit (also referred to as garment fitting) models. Fit models are critical to the fashion industry. They work with manufacturers and fashion designers so that the clothing companies can fit their designs to human frames. Have you ever put on a pair of jeans and they fit perfectly? There was probably a fit model with a body type similar to yours that helped the designer tailor the jeans for you and others like you!

There are several types of fit models, including sample, duplicate and showroom models. A sample model works with designers specifically to help them adjust and fit garments that will be used in an upcoming fashion show, typically debuting a new collection. A duplicate model is used after the fashion show to readjust the garments so that they can be designed for the ready-to-wear collection that will appear in stores for consumers to purchase. Showroom models work with designers and manufactures to model the garments for department store buyers and help them determine if they should purchase the styles for their stores.

One of the most attractive aspects of working as a fit model is that most fit models’ bodies must be similar to the bodies of the manufacturer’s target consumer. Most consumers don’t have the same body type as the models that you see on the runway; therefore while a runway model may be a size 0 or 2, fit models are more likely to be a size 4, 6 or 8. Accordingly, plus-sized clothing manufacturers often hire fit models that are sizes 14 and up. Fit models typically must adhere to specified height, bust-waist-hip circumference, arm and leg length and shoulder width measurements as well. These specifications are usually outlined in the casting call.

As a fit model, you’ll get priceless experience in the fashion industry, an opportunity to work with notable and up-and-coming designers and clothing manufacturers, and sometimes you may even get free clothes. You’ll also get to provide your own personal opinion about the fit of the design to help the designers modify the clothes to satisfy consumers just like you. They’ll ask you your opinion on how the design fits, how the fabric feels and if you’re able to move comfortably in the garment.

If you’re interested in becoming a fit model, or you’re curious about other types of modeling jobs that you might be suited for, visit Elite Casting Network (www.EliteCastingNetwork.com) and review our casting notices.

Interviewing A Potential Acting Coach

Not everyone who professes to be an acting coach is actually qualified to teach you to become a better actor or actress. Therefore it’s important that before you pay for acting classes that you interview your acting coach to determine that they are: 1) trained and experienced and 2) capable of and excited about helping you reach your personal performance goals. A great acting coach will not only help you become the phenomenal actor or actress that you’d always dreamed of being, but also help guide you as you navigate the early stages of your acting career.

Once you’ve generated a list of acting coaches in your area, determine if they have a website. You may find much of the information you need to make a decision based on details provided on their webpage. If not, give them a call and be sure you ask the following:

-        Do you have a list of your credentials?

-        Can I sit in on one of our classes for free before I make my decision?

-        How many students do you instruct in each class?

-        Have any of your former students landed major theatre, television or film roles?

-        Do you offer private instruction?

-        Do you offer a refund policy if I’m unable to attend the remainder of my sessions due to unforeseen circumstances?

It’s very important that you get a list of your teacher’s credentials. There are many teachers who have worked in the industry and have many years of experience, but they don’t necessarily have formal training.

Additionally, many actors find that they get far more out of classes when the teacher limits the size of the classes. While private instruction on a regular basis isn’t necessary, it can be beneficial to have the option of private instruction in cases where you need to work one on one with your teacher or coach to prepare for an important audition, or work on material before your first day on set for a big role.

Elite Casting Network offers an extensive list of acting coaches and teachers on our website. You can also visit our community forum and ask other members for recommendations and referrals. Visit us today at http://www.EliteCastingNetwork.com.

Putting Yourself In The Character’s Shoes… Literally

If there was such a thing as an actor’s toolkit, what do you think would be in it? Of course all actors need a headshot and resume. A Star Search Casting membership is another essential item that every actor should also have. Some might say that every actor should prepare and have committed to memory a song that they can sing well to audition for roles that require both acting and singing. And for actors who are interested in musical theater and audition frequently, a pair of character shoes is a must.

When auditioning for musical theater, many casting notices specify that actors must bring character shoes for their audition. Character shoes are named for their use in theater because they are worn when actresses and actors are performing “in character.” They look very similar to tap shoes, and some actually can be ordered with taps. Character shoes typically come in tan or black, with leather soles, and are designed for rigorous movement and dancing for long periods of time. Directors and casting professionals also prefer character shoes for actors because they provide a sense of uniformity. Character shoes, especially for men, may also be referred to as jazz shoes.

If you’re purchasing a pair of character shoes for the first time, here are a few tips you may find useful:

-        Although character shoes are sold widely online, you may consider visiting a retail establishment to try on a few pairs to determine which style you prefer. You can then comparison shop for the same brand and style online.

-        Character shoes for women are made with varying heel heights. Be sure to pick a height that you’ll be comfortable with.

-        Break your character shoes in by wearing them around the house.

-        Wipe the bottoms of your character shoes (if worn outside) before dancing on wooden floors

Character shoes are available at a variety of price points and can range from $30 - $130. One of the most popular brands of character shoes is Capezio, however there are lots of consumer reviews online that can also help you decide which brand would be best for you.

Feel free to discuss brands, prices and the best retail stores and websites to purchase character shoes on our community forum. Log on to http://www.StarSearchCasting.com today to talk to other singers, dancers, actors and models about career related apparel, supplies and more!

SCAM Alert - Elite Casting Network Members Use Community Forums to Investigate Modeling Agencies

www.EliteCastingNetwork.com members are becoming increasingly diligent about researching agents, managers and other entertainment industry professionals before establishing business relationships with them. In cases where Elite Casting Network members are uncertain about the legitimacy of an agent or manager, they often post their questions to the community forum where the Elite Casting Network staff and other members are quick to assist.

Most recently, a Elite Casting Network member was invited to an audition by Model Management Inc. in Los Angeles. While the member reviewed the company’s website, she still wasn’t sure if the company was a legitimate business. So she posted the name and address of the agency to the community forum to get feedback from the Elite Casting Network staff and other members.

When we researched Model Management Inc. we discovered that there were no complaints filed with the Better Business Bureau against this company, nor were there any complaints on the web. However, there was not much information available about the company at all, other than the company’s website, Myspace.com profile and posts on sites like Craigslist.org.

When we called the company’s Los Angeles office number, we got their voicemail. When we called their toll-free number, we also got a recorded message. In researching the Los Angeles address that the company included in their email to the Elite Casting Network member, we found that the company rents an HQ Global suite. HQ Global is a leading provider of virtual offices and small business suites. According to the company’s website, they have offices in San Diego, Las Vegas and Salt Lake City.

None of the information we uncovered indicates that the company is engaged in fraudulent activity. However, we always recommend that if you’ve diligently researched a company and you still have reservations, feel free to call and ask a few questions if it will make you feel more comfortable.

Not every agency or management company will be a huge enterprise with a full staff and a fancy office. That doesn’t mean that the company isn’t capable of helping you to reach your goals as a model, singer, dancer or actress. In fact many smaller agencies are able to provide their clients with more personalized service. Explore all of your options, both small and large agencies, and then based on the information they provide, decide which option is best for you. For more information on entertainment industry scams, or to ask questions related to companies that have contacted you, log in each day to http://www.EliteCastingNetwork.com and review our community forum and our Scam Alert section.

Should You Go To Modeling School?

Many aspiring models have signed up for modeling classes only to discover they’ve been the victims of a scam. This is unfortunate because there are actually a number of reputable modeling schools that have successfully helped many new models sharpen their skills and approach the industry with confidence. While modeling school does not guarantee your success in the industry, it can be a helpful stepping-stone for many aspiring models who are new to the industry.

In addition to researching the modeling school before you sign up or pay any fees, it’s also important that you learn about the school’s curriculum. To make sure that you benefit from the experience, you want to be sure that you’ll learn valuable information about the industry and helpful tips that can help you secure jobs in the future.

A reputable modeling school should help you to:

-        Develop good posture

-        Learn the fundamentals of walking on the runway

-        Learn how to apply makeup and take care of your skin

-        Develop poise and self confidence

-        Adopt good nutritional habits

-        Learn how to model for the camera

Modeling schools can be extremely helpful for models who are new to the industry and want an opportunity to learn about the industry in a comfortable, nurturing environment.

You should not sign up for modeling schools that require you to pay for photo shoots with specific photographers. Additionally, you should not sign up for modeling schools as a requirement for being signed to an agency. These are common tactics used by disreputable agencies.

Additionally, a reputable modeling school should give you a realistic assessment of your modeling potential. If a modeling school promises you work based on enrolling in their school – it may be a scam

Are you interested in talking to other aspiring models who have enrolled in modeling schools? Visit http://www.StarSearchCasting.com and post your questions in our community forum to learn more about other Star Search Casting members’ experiences in the modeling industry.

Practice Makes Perfect – Tips For Singers

I’m sure you’ve heard the saying, “practice makes perfect.” And no, singing in the shower doesn’t count. If you’ve decided to pursue singing as a career, then it’s time you develop a consistent practice regimen to prepare yourself for the road ahead. To develop a successful practice regimen you’ll need to:

-        Make a schedule of the days and times you will reserve for practicing

-        Research vocal exercises that you can use during your scheduled practice

-        Develop a system for charting your growth

Whether you’ve set aside 20 minutes to practice, or two hours, be sure to begin with a warm up. It’s also important that you prepare the exercises you’ll be working on before your scheduled practice time. If you spend your practice time searching for exercises, or trying to comprehend the instructions, that’s less time that you’re actually working on your voice.

In addition to helping you improve the tone of your voice, committing to a practice schedule will also help you to…

…build endurance. If you’re considering becoming a professional singer, then much like an athlete, you will need to train your voice so that you can sing for long periods of time without your voice fatiguing which can result in pitch problems.

…become a well-rounded singer. Longer practice sessions not only help improve vocal quality, but also help you become a better sight reader, memorize more material, and develop your poise and stage presence.

…gauge your progress. As you practice more often, you will begin to see marked differences in your voice, and begin to note how you’re improving. It’s also advisable to chart your progress on paper so that you can visually see how you’re developing. Curious to learn more about how other Elite Casting Network members improve their vocal technique? Visit our community forum at http://www.EliteCastingNetwork.com to network with other singers. And be sure to check out singing auditions in your area!

Scam Watch: Avoiding Nigerian Scams

Recently, we discovered a scammer claiming to be from the United Kingdom, but according to his IP address, he was actually located in Nigeria.

This was the message he sent:

My name is Phillips Dave, you're one of the few people chosen out of the screening exercise performed by our moderator. You have got the physical features we need for our catalog update, I have a pay job for you. Email me at ModelingAgent@futuresfab.com if you are interested. Hope to hear from you soon.

Nigerian scams first became prevalent in 2001, and have since taken many different forms and victimized thousands of people. Experts offer the following tips to avoid becoming the victim of a Nigerian scammer:

  • If you’ve received a suspicious email, use Google or another popular search engine to search terms used in the email that you’ve received. If it’s a scam, often you will come across complaints from other internet users who have received the same email and posted the information online.
  • Don’t rely on email communication. Advise the sender that you would like to further discuss the opportunity via telephone. Scammers are very reluctant to engage in phone conversations, therefore if the person you’re corresponding with is hesitant to communicate over the phone, that’s an immediate red flag.
  • If the sender makes mention of a bank in their correspondence, use the FDIC’s Institution Directory found on their website to verify that it’s a legitimate establishment.
  • If you are required to make a payment for a service or product on the web, use a credit card because they offer more protection.

For more information on entertainment industry related scams, or tips on avoiding them, log in each day at http://www.EliteCastingNetwork.com and check out our Scam Alert.

Nigerian Scams Reach Epidemic Proportions!

Online schemes operating out of Nigeria that have defrauded victims out of tens of millions of dollars have become so pervasive that the U.S. government has given the West African country until November to take steps to decrease such crimes or face sanctions.

Financial fraud is now reportedly one of the three largest industries in Nigeria, where the anonymity of the Internet is being used to give crime syndicates a windfall.

In 1980 the US Secret Service took a proactive approach to combating Nigerian organized crime by establishing and maintaining task forces throughout the United States whose main focus was the investigation of financial fraud committed by Nigerian nationals and their accomplices.

Membership in these task forces included representatives from the United States Customs Service, Nigerian Crime Initiative (NCI), the Immigration and Naturalization Service, Nigerian Organized Crime Task Force (INOCTF), the United States Postal Inspection Service, U.S. Embassy in Nigeria, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Nigerian National Police (NNP), the Internal Revenue Service, the Department of State's Bureau of Diplomatic Security, bank investigators from the private sector, as well as numerous state and local law enforcement agencies and other Nigerian federal law enforcement agencies. This diverse membership is indicative of the multitude of crimes being perpetrated by Nigerian criminals.

There are so many scams coming out of Nigeria that in June 2000 the US Secret Service established a permanent office in Lagos!

Here are some links and quotes that go into greater detail:

1. FBI - http://www.fbi.gov/hq/cid/orgcrime/africancrim.htm

Is It Time For New Headshots?

Ever wonder what kind of an impression your headshots are making on casting directors? Your headshot is your passport to the role of your dreams. So if your headshots are not a good reflection of you and your personality, or the quality of your headshots is poor, it may take you longer to get to attain the level of success you’d hoped for. Whether your photos are outdated, or simply not the best reflection of your personality, new headshots are often just what an aspiring entertainer needs in order to land the auditions and the roles they have their hearts set on.

But how do you know if it’s time to take new headshots? Consider these questions:

  • Does your photo look natural?
  • Does your photo reflect the way you look now (and not five years ago)?
  • Is your photo a clear shot of you, without distracting objects in the background?
  • Are you looking directly at the camera?
  • Does your photo convey the right image for you?
  • Are the clothes you’re wearing in the photo contemporary?
  • Did you use a professional photographer?
  • Does your photo conform to industry standards?

If you’ve answered no to any of these questions, then you may want to consider taking new photos. Ask friends in the industry (or other Elite Casting Network members) to help you select a professional photographer. It’s also critical that your hair, makeup and attire help you portray an image that will grab the attention of casting directors the moment they set their eyes on your photo.

Once you’ve taken your photos, don’t rush to the printer. Make sure you have several people look at your proof sheet and offer their opinion on which photos are the strongest. Once there’s a consensus, you’ll be in a much better position to decide which photos would help you get the best results.

A headshot that accurately portrays your personality and lets your charisma shine through is the first step towards success in the entertainment industry. Check out some of the head shots posted on our members pages by visiting http://www.EliteCastingNetwork.com. You can also get referrals for photographers in your area by posting to our community forum.

Keeping Actors In The Loop

When we go to the movie theater to watch our favorite actors and actresses in a new film, we’re often blown away by the “magic” that we observe on screen. But there’s a lot of work that’s invested into feature films and just because it looks perfect when we see the end result – that doesn’t meant that it’s the product of a perfect process. In fact, the post-production phase of a film can be very involved and require everyone, even the actors, to help fix flaws that may have occurred during the shooting of the film.

Sometimes when shooting a film, while the footage may look great, there may be problems with the dialog. Perhaps the microphone didn’t pick up all of the lines in their entirety, or maybe background noise distorted the audio, making the dialog difficult to understand. Instead of shooting the entire scene again - which can be quite costly - the director may call an actor into the studio to re-record or dub his or her own dialog. This process is called looping. While it’s not the most exciting part of the job, it’s essential to creating the perfect end result that we’re all used to enjoying in the theater when we sit down with friends, family and buckets of popcorn to watch the latest action flick or romantic comedy.

When an actor is called in for looping, he or she goes into a recording studio with a microphone and a video screen. Once the scene is played for them, the actor must then try to match their dialog to what they see on screen. It sounds simple, but in fact it can be quite a challenge. They must consider rhythm, timing and tone, and sometimes these sessions occur months after they originally filmed the scene, so the scene is no longer fresh in their memory.

While acting is often considered to be a glamorous occupation – and it is – there are a lot of challenges. In addition to all of the creative aspects of the job, there are a lot of technical aspects that happen behind the scenes that can require as much time and energy as the onscreen work.

If you’re ever called into the studio for a looping job, especially if it’s your first time, it can be helpful to practice at home first. Videotape yourself without sound and then play the video back, while trying to match your voice to the video.

Think you have what it takes to make it as a successful actor or actress? Have you checked out the feature film auditions we have posted on our website? Visit http://www.EliteCastingNetwork.com for the latest casting calls in your area.
